| // What is SPS? The Special Program in Sports (SPS) is in line with the efforts of the Department of Education (DepED) to institutionalize a program that will identify/discover students with potential talent in sports and hone their skills for higher levels of athletic competitions. The SPS was piloted in 15 schools nationwide for a period of four (4) years and is now offered to other schools for adoption. // Objectives The Special Program in Sports aims to: • Identify talented athletes who shall be trained to compete
in national and international sports competition;
• Enhance skills of students in sports; and
• Produce athletes imbued with healthy attitude who can
contribute to the promotion of sports in the country.
// Curriculum • The school shall offer a four-year secondary level
curriculum based on the Basic Education Curriculum (BEC),
with specialization in sports.
• In addition to athletics and/or swimming, which are the basic
sports requirement, the school shall offer any approved
DepED or any of the following sports (a minimum
of five individual/dual sports and three team sports);

Basketball
Football
Sepak Takraw
Softball
Volleyball
• Values Education shall be integrated in all Specialization
subjects.
• The specialization subject shall be written in the report card
under Specialization.
// Admission to the Program The SPS shall be open to all Filipino high school-age students who fulfill the following requirements: • Must have potentials/skills in more than one of the
school sports offered;
• Must have participated in any sports competition as attested
by the elementary school principal; and
• Must pass the Physical Fitness-Sports Talent Identification
and skills tests.
• The students admitted to the Special Program in Sports shall
form a separate section/class from the regular class program.
// Requirements to Offer the SPS The school must have: • A track record of winning in sports competitions for the past three years;
• The standard equipment and facilities of the selected sports being offered/facilities within the community that the school can use, namely:
• track and field oval
• gymnasium/covered court
• Basketball court
• Volleyball court
• Football/softball/baseball field
• Spacious playing area
• Sports equipment
• The maximum number of students in the following sports events:
• Athletics - 30
• Swimming - 20
• Archery - 8
• Arnis - 10
• Racket Games - 8
• Chess - 4
• Gymnastics - 11 (5 boys & 6 girls)
• Taekwondo - 36
• Team Sports - 30
• Sepak Takraw - 12
• For its manpower resources, the school shall have:
• An administrator who is a sports enthusiast
• Qualified teachers/trainers/coaches in sports
• A department head/sports coordinator who is
acknowledgeable in sports
